TAPLOW CHOIR WIN YOUTH CHOIR OF THE YEAR

Taplow Youth Choir
ALL SMILES: Taplow Youth Choir, crowned the best young choir in the UK at the national competition held in Liverpool.

Taplow Youth Choir have been crowned the best youth choir in the UK after triumphing in a BBC competition. They wowed judges to win the youth section at the prestigious BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year competition. The 60-strong band of singers stole the show at the Liverpool final and willl have their sweet-singing voices aired on national radio. They will compete in the grand final at the Royal Festival Hall on December 7.

Gillian was `elated' with the choir's performance, She said: "They were fantastic. For me the feeling of taking young people to that level is so great. They will never look back and they can go on to achieve great things."

Chorister Harriet Burdett, a former Maidenhead Advertiser Carnival Queen, recalls how they jumped around celebrating after their epic win was announced at the Royal Philharmonic Hall. "The whole experience was fantastic," she said. "Aled Jones told us how impressed he was with our performance which was great to hear." The dedicated team, who also performed at the Schools Prom at the Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday, are now gearing up for the grand final. "It's slightly daunting how much work we have to do for it but we're excited too," added the 17-year-old from Maidenhead.

The mixed choir, which draws most of its members from Maidenhead, Slough and Windsor, boasts a long list of achieve­ments despite only being set up in September 2006.

All Taplow's choirs are doing well, receiving invitations to sing in excellent venues, and enjoying their regular rehearsals. There are vacancies in the two younger, non auditioned groups. Visitors are welcome to come along on any Saturday morning in term time to join in and talk to the staff.

BOYS' AND CHILDREN'S CHOIRS
Philip Viveash is directing the children's choir and the boys' choir - both groups are doing very well, and are enjoying a variety of repertoire and performance opportunities. Philip is keen to welcome new members. Just come along on any Saturday during term time to Taplow Village Centre, at 10.00 am -11.00 am for the Children's choir, or 11.15 am - 12.15 pm for the boys' group - meet the other members and sing along.

AUDITIONED GIRLS' CHOIR
The Girls' Choir has 48 members aged 9 to 15. They perform regularly at local concerts and have enjoyed outside venues which include Reading Town Hall, with Chaconne Brass, Windsor Parish Church and A.B.C.D. Convention Gala Concert in Guildford Cathedral.

In April 2007 they took part in an International Choral Competition in Celje, Slovenia and returned to the UK with Gold and Silver Medals and the Adjudicator's Special Prize for the best performance in the festival of a compulsory set piece. In 2008, they reached the finals of the BBC Radio 3 'Choir of the Year' competition and in July 2009 they gave the Premier of a new work at Lichfield Festival - 'Dreamfighter' by Tim Sutton. In June 2010 the choir will record a new work for composer Jonathan Willcocks called 'Good for You'. In May 2010 Taplow Girls' Choir will compete in the Florilège Vocal de tours, an international Choral Competition.
