TAPLOW GIRLS' CHOIR AT ST NICOLAS CHURCH TAPLOW
About Us
The choir was founded in Autumn 2004, and its 45 members are drawn from a wide area around Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire. Current membership includes pupils from 21 different schools and one member who is educated at home.
Highlights of a busy and exciting schedule in the first ten years have been a trip to the International Choral Competition in Celje, Slovenia, in April 2007; reaching the finals of the BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year competition in autumn 2008, and competing in the Florilège Vocal de Tours, France, in May 2010.
In 2016, the choir returned to France to on a tour comprising three stunning concerts.
In Slovenia, the choir won two Silver Medals, in the Children’s and Girls’ Choir categories, and also received the Adjudicator’s special prize for the festival’s best performance of a compulsory set piece. In Tours, they came second in the Children’s Choir category, with a Hungarian Choir winning the overall prize.
Previous concert tours have included Paris (with performances in Notre Dame, La Madeleine, and even at Disneyland), and the Rhineland (where the highlight was singing at the noon service of prayers in Cologne Cathedral). The choir visited Belgium in 2014, with concerts in the cathedrals of Ghent and Brussels.
In July 2009 they gave the first performance of Dreamfighter by Tim Sutton in the Lichfield Festival. They have also taken part in Windsor Festival and gave a Christmas concert in Reading Concert Hall with Chaconne Brass. Other exciting performance venues have included Guildford Cathedral, St David’s Hall in Cardiff, and The Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool. The choir sings choral evensong annually at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, and has performed in concerts with Ascot Brass and The Laurie Holloway Trio.
Taplow Girls’ Choir recently recorded Good for You by Jonathan Willcocks, a cycle of songs for children about healthy eating. They were also delighted to be guests of Slough Philharmonic Society in December 2014 to sing the Gallery Choir role in Britten’s Saint Nicolas.
